The perfect city to go for a relax vacation and enjoy the local activity and life of a historic city. Perfect food, security, place to go, historic locations to explore, and also a new and old city together in the same location.
The medina was a really busy, bustling place & a bit like a halfway point to being in India. As there are so many small streets, alleys it can be quite difficult to get your bearings/find your way around. This was so even after we'd had a really good guided tour around the medina, on the afternoon that we arrived. There are many interesting places to see in the city, but the best part was just wandering around getting a feel for the bustling medina, its shops & markets. There are many good restaurants @ very reasonable prices, although being an Islamic country, there weren't many places selling alcohol. Beyond suggesting a guided tour by a local to get a feel for the place, I'd also highly recommend a day walking tour of the Atlas mountains to get a feel for how people live outside the big city.
Loved walking around in the side streets of the markets! It's best to move around as they open at 10am to avoid the overcrowded afternoons. We tried all the trendy spots as well as some street food options, and next time we will stick to the street food :) it's inexpensive, tastier and totally safe for western bellies! It can be easy to get lost in the little market side streets, but there will be always someone ready to point you to the right direction :) beware of motorcycles drivers, they're fearless even in the narrowest streets. keep the right and all senses in alert. Outside of the main touristy roads it gets more authentic.
We have been to Marrakesh many times and even lived there for an extended period of time. Rich in culture & experiences. From the minute you get off the plane, you can smell the city...spices! Cool breezes in the evenings, music...food. The Moroccan people are kind and welcoming (they can also be overwhelming in the Souks but that is part of the adventure). Moroccans have an excellent work ethic and their service level is amazing! A truly beautiful window into a completely different culture. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Getting around Marrakesh is quite easy, although make sure you know the average to pay or you will easily get ripped off. Be wary of people who offer to help take you somewhere or show you where something is... they will almost always expect you to give them money. This is the most frustrating part of being in Marrakesh. We still fall for it at least once every time we are there :) The city has had quite a transformation over the last 12-15 years. They painted Marrakesh & it looks EPIC! Such a great improvement. They have also introduced ICED MOROCCAN TEA and it is a game-changer.
I found the people warm and friendly. i expected a more persistent sales pitch. i felt everywhere i travelled in the city was safe. i would have liked to have had more exposure to history in the museums as i felt they focused a great deal on art. The gardens and hammams were exceptional.
Marrakesh, the medina and beyond, offers opportunities to experience Morrocan life as it has been for centuries. From quaint museums in the medina, to art galleries beyond, expect nonstop sensory excitement. The sounds, smells, and culinary options in and around the medina are neverending. And then, there are unparalleled shopping opportunities across a broad range of local crafts - bring empty suitcases! A week is just not enough to experience Marrakesh.
